Maintenance

We produce our lavvoes and gams in a durable cotton/polyester fabric. The fabric is impregnated, rot-resistant and protected against UV rays. The cotton/polyester blend makes the fabric breathable, and the impregnation prevents water droplets from penetrating the fabric.

The best laboratory is nature itself, and for 30 years, Venor products have been thoroughly tested. We have received feedback about Venor lavvos that have been in active use for over 20 years, that's great! The climate and use have a lot to do with how long they last. A lavvo or gamme that is permanently pitched on the coast, where wind and salt spray dominate, will have a shorter lifespan than a lavvo or gamme that is used in a drier climate, and is stored dry between uses.

How to maintain your Venor Lavvo and Venor Gamme?

Although the fabric has UV protection, the sun will fade the color of the product over time. Water resistance is maintained by re-impregnating the fabric as needed. In case of heavy use (permanently pitched lavvoers/gamms), we recommend re-impregnating annually to every two years.

If you have soil deposits on the cloth, there is a product that can be used to remove soil deposits. Lavvoer/gamms that have been left in damp environments for a long time are more susceptible to soil deposits. The lavvoer/gamm must be dried after use and stored dry to avoid rotting.

How to impregnate?

It is perfectly fine to impregnate yourself. Open the lavvo/gamme on a dry and mild day. Brush off soil, sand, twigs, leaves, etc. and find the impregnation. We recommend filling the impregnation in a low-pressure pump can, and spraying evenly over the entire lavvo/gamme. Use a stepladder to reach as far up as possible. Let the cloth dry outside in the fresh air.

If you are going to impregnate a large lavvo, you can lay the cloth down on a tarpaulin and impregnate. The cloth must be lifted up to dry. It takes a few days for the impregnation smell to evaporate from the lavvo/gammed cloth.

For best results when maintaining your Venor Lavvo or Gamme we recommend the following procedure:

  1. Mix Multivask 213M with water. Mixing ratio between 1:5 - 1:10
  2. Spray on the lavvo and let it work for 5-15 minutes. (NB! It is important that it does not dry out)
  3. Rinse thoroughly with a water hose or high-pressure washer (we recommend a high-pressure washer, but be careful not to use too powerful a nozzle)
  4. If not everything is clean, you can repeat the same procedure, or mix the multi-wash more vigorously in exposed areas.
  5. Let the lavvo dry after washing.
  6. Impregnate with our impregnation 460. Impregnate thoroughly and remember that the lavvo must be dry before impregnation.
  7. Let the impregnation dry.
  8. Apply Fungicides 221H, mixed 1:5 with water. It should not rain during application, but the surface of the lavvo may be slightly damp.
  9. Fungicide should dry in and NOT be rinsed off.

Condensation

Condensation forms when cold and warm air meet. We have good experience with overnight stays in our lavvos and gammas, and do not experience major condensation problems in our products. This is due to the ability of the fabric to breathe, in combination with the good heating options you have in a lavvo and gamma. A stove, or a fire, helps to keep it dry and nice. In cases where you sleep in the lavvo/gamma, without heating, you will be able to feel some moisture on the fabric and dew on the windows, this dries up quickly when you turn up the heat.

The higher the humidity inside the lavvo/gam, the more condensation you can get. Cooking, drying clothes, damp ground, wet shoes and evaporation from the people inside the lavvo/gam, can cause increased condensation.
An inner cloth will insulate, thereby further reducing the condensation problem. In addition, valve(s) will be of great help in releasing steam. During cooking, you can open the valves, or leave the door ajar. A bottom/moisture barrier will also contribute to a drier indoor climate.

Leaks

When the lavvo/gamme is brand new, small leaks may occur in the seams during the first few rainy days that the lavvo/gamme is set up. The leakage is caused by rainwater penetrating through the small pinholes in the seams. We use a special thread that swells and adapts to the pinholes, so that as the thread swells, it seals the pinholes.

After a period of use, you may notice that the cloth lets in a little water. It is then time to impregnate the cloth so that its waterproofness is maintained.

Repairs

We carry out large and small repairs on lavvoer and gammer (and possibly other sewn products). If you are unfortunate enough to get a tear in the cloth, it is generally no problem to repair it. We can replace windows, replace pipe penetrations, replace zippers, repair rods and much more. We repair cloths of all "ages", but it sometimes happens that the cloth is in too poor a condition for us to recommend repair. If there is a complaint/warranty matter, we will of course pay for shipping to and from us. It should be safe to shop with us.
